BIOGRAPHY - paulo brasil

Considered one of the most versatile pianists at present, the brazilian pianist Paulo Brasil is known for his warm and coloful sound, brilliant technique and his ability to reproduce the essentials of every style, every culture, every period, without losing the richness of the modern piano. That was well recognized after winning the Third Prize in the «Spanish Composers Piano Competition», in Las Rozas (Madrid) and in 2007, the First Prize in the «Antón García Abril Piano Competition», both competitions being held in Spain.

His wide versatility is reflected not only in the field of classical but also in the popular music, an area in which he explores in depth the exuberance of the sense of color and rhythm emanating from the rich source of the music of his country. That all endows him with an extensive musical experience, appreciated by his chamber music colleagues and the audience. Living in Galicia, Spain, since 2018, he is frequently on tour mainly in Spain, Germany and Brazil, as soloist and chamber music player.

Paulo Brasil was born on March 10, 1976 in Santo Amaro, Bahia, Brazil. His musical education began at the age of six, when he had his first piano lessons with his mother and Dr. Helena Coppens in Salvador. From 1983 to 1991 he studied with Ryoko Veiga at the School of Music at the Federal University of Bahia and from 1992 to 1993 with Miriam Ramos at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. A scholarship enabled him to continue my studies with Prof. Natalia Troull at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow. In 1998 he became a student of Prof. Igo Koch at the Conservatory of Music of the City of Vienna (now known as MUK – Musik und Kunst Privatuniversität) from where he graduated in 2002.

His first solo recital, given at the age of 10 years, took place at the Concert Hall of the University of Bahia on November 10, 1986. Four days later he had his debut with Joseph Haydn’s Piano Concerto in D major with the Symphony Orchestra of the University of Bahia.

In 1991 Paulo Brasil was invited to perform the Piano Concerto No. 3 by Ludwig van Beethoven with the same orchestra on the occasion of the Opening of the Concert Season.

In 1992, after winning the piano competition for soloists he was invited to perform the Piano Concerto No. 1 by Franz Liszt together with the UFRJ Symphony Orchestra on the 144th anniversary of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

As a soloist and as a chamber music player Paulo has performed in various cities in his home country Brazil and in several important concert halls in Europe, such as “Radiokulturhaus” of Vienna, Teatro Rosalía de Castro in A Coruña (Galicia-Spain), “Teatro Peón Contreras” in Mexico, “Teatro Monumental”, “Fundación Juan March” and the “Palacio de Congresos” in Madrid with broadcast by the media (TVE Bahia, Ö1 Rundfunk, “Radio Televisón Española”, “Radio Televisión de Galicia”, etc).
